Community of Practice
Finance and Biodiversity

In collaboration with APLB (Workshops for Biodiversity) and CRABE (Applied Research Centre on Biodiversity and Ecosystems), Finance Montréal is facilitating a community of practice that brings together financial stakeholders seeking to better integrate biodiversity-related considerations into their practices.

These collaborative sessions bring together financial institutions, public organizations, researchers, and experts to foster knowledge sharing, collective learning, and the development of concrete initiatives.

Why a community of practice?

Transitioning toward a nature-positive economy requires stronger integration of biodiversity considerations into financial practices. In a context of rapidly evolving regulatory frameworks and market expectations, fostering the exchange of  experiences has become essential. The community of practice provides a space for exchange and collaboration, enabling organizations to deepen their knowledge and develop practical solutions adapted  to their realities.

It offers a practical space to:

  • Track regulatory and standard-setting developments.
  • Strengthen knowledge and capacity within the financial sector.
  • Access expert presentations on nature-related issues.
  • Exchange with peers on shared challenges.
  • Share best practices and test ideas.
  • Explore biodiversity-positive solutions in financial decision-making.

Key topics

The community of practice focuses on the key issues related to integrating biodiversity into financial decision-making. Building on priorities identified by participants, and on trends observed in Quebec and internationally, the community explores both strategic and operational topics.

Discussions aim to improve understanding of nature-related risks and opportunities, track emerging practices and reference frameworks, and develop practical approaches adapted to the realities of financial institutions.

Topics include:

Assessing and managing biodiversity-related risks;

  • Identifying nature-related investment and transition opportunities.
  • Financing nature-based solutions.
  • Emerging frameworks, standards, and taxonomies (ISSB, ISO, TNFD, taxonomies).
  • Data, indicators, technologies, and analytical tools;
  • Skills development and training.
  • Engagement practices and integration into financial processes.

Proposed activities

The community of practice is based on a collaborative and participatory approach, where members are actively involved in discussions and initiatives. Activities are designed to foster peer learning, strengthen skills, and encourage the sharing of real-world experiences.

The objective is to create a dynamic space that supports both knowledge sharing and the development of impactful, practical solutions.

Within this framework,, the community offers:

  • Expert presentations.
  • Peer-to-peer experience sharing.
  • Thematic working groups.
  • Regulatory monitoring and analysis.
  • Co-creation of tools, guides, and pilot projects.
