Rooted in history and honour, ties between China and the Canadian province of Quebec continue to grow stronger.

THE “NORMAND Bethune Medal”, the highest medical honour bestowed by the Chinese ministry of health, is named after a Canadian doctor who studied and worked in Montreal but who died while stationed with the Chinese Communist Party’s 8th Route army in 1939. The award and its history are reflective of strong links between the province of Quebec and China – links which are often overlooked due to the heavy focus on China’s relationship with cities in Canada’s west.
